Horsham Shannon-igans

Hello there, and welcome back to our blog! Sorry, we’ve taken a few weeks off with all of the Shannon-igans going on… If you don’t get what I mean, well; one, we have opened our second location in Horsham and two, we are welcoming the beautiful Shannon to our team! (do you get it now?)

It is with absolute pleasure we welcome our newest Steph Meyer & Co team member, Shannon. We have had the pleasure of getting to know this beautiful soul so thought you’d like to get to know a bit about her too! Listen up and listen in while we chat….

Shannon! Welcome to the team! We’re so blessed to have you a part of our little team… Firstly, how long have you been hairdressing?

Shannon: Thanks so much! I’m so stoked to be a part of the team. I have been hairdressing since 2016! I started my apprenticeship when I was just 16 years old!

Wow, so a few years now! When did you know/ what made you decide to become a hairdresser? I loved the idea of doing something different everyday day and meeting lots of different people! I knew from a very young age that I didn’t want to be in an office job, so I started looking at careers that were more hands-on and that’s when I decided on hairdressing!

Sixteen is such a ripe age to know what you want to do so we admire you for your bravery to pursue a career in hairdressing! What your favourite thing about it?

Hahaha... it wasn’t an easy decision to leave my friends at school and “grow up” so quickly but I honestly love meeting new people and talking to them! A big part of hairdressing is building a strong, long-lasting and trusting relationship with clients; but once you get to that point, it’s very much like having a friend come in and spending time together but with an awesome hair transformation at the end! Like any friend, I love hearing about peoples’ lives and their stories! It’s always so fun and interesting to learn about my clients!

At Steph Meyer & Co, that’s something we know very well; And, actually, one of the sole reasons Steph started a new concept salon… It takes a lot to venture out and find a new hairdresser and trust them with your entire look! It’s difficult, we totally get the connecting thing! So, tell us, what’s your favourite thing to do, hairdressing?

Absolutely! It’s so much more than cutting and dying hair. When someone comes in and trusts you with the “look” or style; the creativity and challenge behind it give me a real thrill but such a great sense of accomplishment. In saying that, my favourite thing to do hairdressing is balayage! I love that you can create a look that’s soft and natural. When it starts to grow out, it’s not harsh. It’s easy to maintain but gives a look so much depth and contrast.

I had a client who was struggling a lot in her personal life. She came into the salon I was working at and she was so happy with the colour I had done she cried and hugged me! It was so special to make someone feel like that just from a good pamper! That moment keeps me so inspired!

We totally get that! Mastering blonde and balayage is a challenge! If you didn’t become a hairdresser, what do you think you’d be?

I wasn’t a hairdresser I would definitely put my social skills to use and be a police officer! In a way, you could say I’m “policing” people’s looks. Real community duty kinda thing!

Hahahaha, well I mean, someone’s gotta do it! You’re really taking one for the team there 😉 So, where do you find the latest hair trends? – I mean, if you’re going to “police” peoples’ looks…

I get all of my hair trends and inspiration from Instagram! I love Eric Vaughn! He creates some amazing colour work!

So, would you say he’s your “hair icon”?

For sure! Eric Vaughn is such a talented hairstylist and is so intelligent! I love following his journey for inspiration. My other hair icon is Sophie Floyd! She always has the best style and I love how she utilises her natural curl to create a fun haircut!

Okay, tell us, if you could choose any celebrity to create a brand-new style for, who would it be?

I would actually love to style for anyone who is remotely famous! Not to change their look but to spend the time having a chat and getting to know them! I would love to hear about their busy life and pamper them for a few hours. If I had to pick someone “famous”, it would be… Miley Cyrus. She is forever changing her look and attitude! I think she’d be super easy to get along with and welcoming to a new style; it would be almost like creative freedom!

Hahaha… it’s always fun to creative freedom but also understand when clients' come in with a particular look – what’s your advice, or how do you go about managing their expectations?

I think communication is key! So many hairdressers are under the pump, so much so they can’t give the client the dedicated time to understand exactly what they want. It’s as simple as spending an extra 10 minutes consulting with the client to make sure we’re both on the same page.

Shannon, that’s so true! And might we say, that answer just nails exactly why we knew you’d be the perfect fit! In saying that; Apart from super talented hairdressers, what do you think makes a salon great?

The friendship! Having a relaxed environment helps to make a salon great! When your whole team gets along super well, you know you are going to love working where you do! Passion is everything in hairdressing. You can be taught the skills but you can’t teach passion! When you work around people who are passionate about what they do, the motivation comes naturally. An instant bond that makes the “job” so much more enjoyable than a traditional “job”.

Shannon, you’ve been at Steph Meyer & Co about six weeks now – settled in(?). What’s your favourite thing about working here? Honestly, I just love how fun and relaxed it is! I came from a salon that was super busy and full-on – jumping from one client to another; I just felt like that’s not what I got into this profession for. I’m really enjoying being able to take my time with clients, get to know them and prioritize their colour from start to finish! It sounds like a bit of a wank but, honestly, the feeling I get when a client walks about glowing with satisfaction makes my day!

Oh, you! Such a honey hahaha – you’re going to fit right in here! We’re about to finish up but a couple of quick questions before we do… One - give us your best hair tip

My best hair tip is to get frequent trims! Although there is no actual research to back it up, getting hair cuts often really does help your hair grow!

Two… What’s one hair product you can’t live without?

I can’t live without dry shampoo! My hair gets oily super fast so dry shampoo is always my go-to best friend!

Shannonigans, thanks so much for introducing yourself! We are so excited to have you a part of our team at our brand-new Horsham location. It’s a pleasure to know you and learn about you!
